Some records don’t survive as documents at all — they survive as oral history, passed down until someone finally writes them down. Reconciling those accounts with the written record is delicate work, since memory and paperwork don’t always agree on the details.

When they don’t, the disagreement itself is often worth recording. It’s usually a sign that the official record left something out — and that the fuller story is still out there, waiting to be asked about.
