Uncovering lost narratives in digital archives

For decades, the details of who appears in a photograph or who wrote a letter lived only in the memory of whoever filed it away. Digitization is changing that, letting archivists cross-reference names, dates, and places across collections that were never meant to speak to one another.
The result is a slow but steady process of re-identification — a face in a group photo matched to a name in a ledger, a letter matched to the event it describes. Each match adds a small piece back to a story that was never fully lost, just scattered.
There’s still far more to uncover than any one archivist can manage alone, which is part of why we’re building these digital tools in the first place: to make the search easier for the researchers who come after us.
